Three kiwi chicks hatch at Pukaha!
We are thrilled to let you know that
in our brooding centre.
These chicks are from the kiwi that we brought down from Little Barrier Island earlier this year. Their parents settled in to the forest, fattened themselves up and got down to business. August is the breeding month and so far, it has been a successful one.
The survival rate for kiwi in the wild is 5%. With the BNZ Operation Nest Egg programme, there is a 65% chance of survival in the first vulnerable 12 months.
The smiles on our rangers faces say it all. That is Bruce Vander Lee (left), Rosemary Vander Lee (centre) and Vince Waanders (right).
The upgrade to the nocturnal kiwi house will dramatically improve your viewing in to the brooding centre and enable interaction with the Rangers. Make sure you visit us this summer to see how these little guys are getting on.
