Caught!

Fantastic news for all our supporters - a large ferret was caught today.

We have a highly-trained dog called Spirit working with us as the hunt continues for the predators threatening kiwi in the reserve.   This terrific little Border Terrier is specially trained to track predators like stoats and ferrets.  She and her handlers have been working with our team for over a week now.

We are pulling out all the stops to hunt predators down.  As well as the tracker dog, intensive re-baiting and trap checking continues.

News of the kill today is encouraging and demonstrates the trapping programme is having some success.  However, controlling predators,  like ferrets, is an on-going battle .

Trying to create an unfenced sanctuary for kiwi in an 940 hectare reserve is an ambitious programme and we appreicate all the support we can get to make the area as safe as possible for the kiwi.

Sincere thanks from the entire Pukaha team, the emails of encouragement and support are much appreciated.
